How to Write with a Dip Pen Nib

Dip Pen Nibs hold ink in the small yet deep grooves in the nibs as you write. Dip nib pens work best with thinner fountain pen inks because the thin grooves don’t allow the more viscous calligraphy ink to flow well. Thicker ink hugs the nib and dries, making it difficult to clean completely. Dip your glass or metal nib about halfway into your inkwell, then remove any excess ink. To begin writing, start with a light amount of pressure, then vary that pressure to see what works best for you. Try writing at an angle and not vertically. Clean your pen regularly as you write by dipping it in water every 2-3 minutes and then wiping it clean with a cotton cloth.

About Bortoletti

Bortoletti Fonderia Artistica was founded in a small laboratory on the edge of a Venice lagoon in 1980 by four brothers and their father's passion for sculpture and bronze. An encounter between Bortoletti and Venetian artist Elio Martella led to a fusion of art and intentions, triggering intense research to give practicality, beauty, color and elegance to calligraphy’s instrument of preference: the dip pen. Bortoletti creates original Italian wooden dip pens with antique nibs to give everyone an opportunity to appreciate unique pen sets.
