If you’re looking for something completely unique, yet with a historical patina, look no further than the Cleo Skribent “Der Gessner” pencil. This handcrafted wooden pencil flows from a 400-year old design that combines tradition with originality.
The original Gessner was created by Conrad Gessner (1516-1565), a universally educated Swiss scientist and inventor, and first used in the Middle Ages. Gessner illustrated this wooden pencil in 1565 where he described a hollow shaft where a lead stylus could be inserted and secured with a tapered wooden split sleeve. Et voila, the first “mechanical” pencil was born! Cleo Skribent has carefully recreated the Der Gessner, staying true to Gessner’s original sketches and process. The pencil’s shaft is carved from a single piece of high quality wood and it has a beautiful stylized finial end that resembles a pawn chess piece. The new Der Gessner pencil is an ideal artistic instrument for sketching, drawing, shading and highlighting and can be used with 5.6mm pencil lead and 5.6mm colored leads. Just like the original, the lead is held in place by a separate wooden shim, which can be easily removed when you wish to change the lead. The Cleo Skribent Der Gessner luxury pencil set is packaged in a protective jute pouch inside a wooden case complete with leads of various grades, a penknife, a slate, sandpaper and sanding block to sharpen the lead and an eraser. The jute pouch is ideal for carrying around the extra leads when you’re out sketching in nature.
