Knives as Letter Openers
Did you know that letter openers evolved from paper knives? Back in the time of hand-produced books, printed sheets were folded over and often had a closed edge that needed severing, so a paper knife was used to cut open the pages. The French have kept up the tradition of creating finely crafted knives, although now they serve other purposes, like cutting up your steak dinner.
