Crafting Marbled Paper

Marbled paper has been produced in the same painstaking way for centuries and the Italians are masters of the craft. The "Marbled" or "à la cuve" design is thought to have originated in Japan or Persia and has been used in Europe since the 16th century. This technique, which requires great precision, reached its apex of development in Italy. A basin is filled with a gelatinous, vegetable-base liquid and surface-sprayed with different colors. While the colors float on the surface, the craftsman moves the colors around using combs or wooden rods. This creates marbled images that spread and blend together on the liquid’s surface. When the pattern is completed, the papers are gently placed on the surface of the liquid without disturbing the design. Only a few seconds are necessary for the paper to absorb the colors and the decoration is completed. There is great skill in reproducing the same pattern for mass production.
